(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A 21-year-old has been arrested on arson charges in connection to several fires in Colorado Springs over the last seven months that police said were intentionally set.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), detectives from the Regional Explosives Unit began investigating in December 2024 after a fire was set inside an apartment building in the 2000 block of East Bijou Street, northeast of Memorial Park. CSPD said several items were set on fire in an occupied apartment on Dec. 10, though the tenants of the apartment were able to extinguish the fire before it caused any injuries or significant damage.
On Dec. 21, 2024, a car was set on fire near Memorial Park, resulting in the total loss of the car. The car was valued at $22,000, CSPD said.
On April 21, 2025, a fire was set at the shuttered Joe’s Crab Shack near the Citadel Mall. The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to the fire, which also ignited a nearby tree before being brought under control.
On July 13, a grass fire was set in the 1500 block of Space Center Drive, near the Space Center Walmart, which CSPD said endangered people nearby.
Detectives identified 21-year-old Brandon Hugney as an arson suspect, and he was subsequently taken into custody. He is being booked in to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on multiple charges, including first degree arson, second degree arson, fourth degree arson, and intentionally setting a wildfire.
The investigation into Hugney’s connection to these fires is ongoing, and CSPD asked anyone with additional information to contact police at (719) 444-7000 or the Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers at (719) 634-STOP (7867).
