CSPD Investigators: Street racing suspect arrested in fatal 2024 crash

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has made an arrest in a fatal crash investigation from 2024 after investigators said they have reason to believe that the suspect was involved in a street race with another vehicle when the crash happened.

On May 25, 2024, CSPD responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Briargate Parkway and Chapel Hills Drive. Both drivers were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and one of the drivers, identified as 53-year-old Maroufeh Kazemi, later succumbed to her injuries.

The CSPD Major Crash team responded to the scene and assumed the responsibility of the investigation, through it, they developed probable cause for the arrest of 22-year-old Kaikeanalu Umiamaka and issued an arrest warrant on Thursday, Feb. 6. Umiamaka turned himself into the El Paso County Jail the following day.

According to CSPD, investigators said they have a reason to believe that Umiamaka was involved in an impromptu street race with another vehicle when the crash happened. Umiamaka was charged with Felony Vehicular Homicide – Reckless Driving, Reckless Driving, Speed Contest, and Speeding (40+ over the limit).
