CSPD K9: Nyx has a nose for crime and fashion

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A girl can be pretty in pink while tracking down illegal substances, and no one knows this better than K9 Nyx. A Belgian Malinois with a killer sense of fashion and an even more lethal sense of smell, Nyx is a certified narcotics detection K9 with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) who proves that beauty and brains can come in the same four-legged package.

Whether sporting her high-fashion pink booties and collar, or her cutting-edge bullet-and-stab-protective vest, Nyx is always ready for action. She wears multiple hats, sniffing out illegal drugs not only for CSPD but also for the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Colorado Springs Resident Office. She also supports patrols from time to time, being a dedicated working girl who loves to keep the people of Colorado Springs safe. No narcotics stash can stay hidden for long when she is on the case.

On Jan. 19, 2025, K9 Nyx jumped into action after the Metro Narcotics Unit (MNU) called for the help of the dog that CSPD has named “the narcotics detection queen.”

MNU was notified that a vehicle carrying a large amount of methamphetamine could be coming into the Colorado Springs area, and after an investigation revealed the vehicle’s whereabouts, officers were able to carry out a traffic stop on I-25.

None of the members of MNU has a sense of smell quite as keen as K9 Nyx, so she was called in to perform a task uniquely suited to “one of the finest noses on the force.” K9 Nyx permitted an MNU Detective to accompany her as she conducted an open-air sniff in the area. A familiar odor captured her attention, and it was coming directly from the vehicle.

Nyx had been trained to identify the distinct fragrance of illegal narcotics, and sure enough, two bins of over 100 lbs of methamphetamine were discovered in the bed of the truck.

CSPD was so proud of Nyx for helping MNU remove drugs from the streets that they took a celebration photo of her with the bounty she had found.

When Nyx isn’t helping CSPD chase down leads, she keeps her girlish figure by playing fetch, having been named the ball-chasing champ. Since she was a pup, she’s been able to jump to heights that would make her worthy to star in an “Air Bud” movie sequel. Nyx is not one to let any ball escape, and she will jump to soaring heights to catch her prize.

As the reigning narcotics detection queen, Nyx knows how to choose her throne wisely. Though she has a keen eye for a dignified seat in even the most unusual locations, her preferred spot is in front of the television, passing judgment on reality stars with wisdom and insight. Nyx has a comprehensive grasp of the affairs of “Love is Blind,” “Too Hot to Handle,” and “Little Baby Bum.” But no show is complete without a cuddle from her favorite people.

K9 Nyx and her powerful nose have been keeping the streets of Colorado Springs clean and classy, bringing style, grit, and “tail-wagging dedication” to the job every day.
