(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reported that on Friday, Dec. 6, officers and deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office’s (EPSO) Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force arrested a suspect wanted on a warrant for homicide, with help from K9 Riggs.
According to CSPD, the suspect was considered armed and dangerous. Around 10:30 p.m., a detective from EPSO tracked him to a business parking lot in the 800 block of South 8th Street, near Highway 24 and I-25, when assistance was requested from the CSPD Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) and the K9 unit.
When law enforcement contacted the suspect, he ran away while clutching his waistband, ignoring warnings from CSPD to stop and lay on the ground to avoid being chased by K9 Riggs. While running from police, the suspect threw away a handgun, according to CSPD.
CSPD said that K9 Riggs was released and caught the suspect, holding him until officers took him into custody.
The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries he received during the arrest and later booked into the Criminal Justice Center. He faces warrants for first-degree murder as well as failure to appear on previous charges, including vehicle theft, eluding, possession of a defaced firearm, and obstruction.
