CSPD: K9 Riggs subdues violent suspect, leading to arrest

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — After a struggle, K9 Riggs facilitated the arrest of an armed domestic disturbance suspect on Wednesday, July 30, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD). The suspect had been threatening and resisting officers until, despite the suspect’s best attempts, resisting K9 Riggs became impossible.

According to CSPD, officers responded to the 1100 block of Norwood Avenue, near Lake Avenue and South Nevada Avenue, on reports of a domestic disturbance, and while they were investigating, the suspect allegedly fired several rounds. Officers set up containment and tried to negotiate with him as he stood in the front yard of the home.

CSPD stated that the suspect refused to listen to commands and threatened to assault and fight with officers, while claiming that less-lethal tools would not affect him. The CSPD Tactical Enforcement Unit and members of the K9 Unit, including Riggs, were called to the scene.

According to CSPD, after nearly an hour of trying to negotiate with the suspect, officers were unable to convince him to surrender peacefully, and he continued to violently threaten the officers. To stop the suspect from going back into the home, K9 Riggs was released to catch him.

K9 Riggs quickly caught the suspect and held on to him, even while the suspect fought against him, kicking and punching at the dog, according to police. The suspect then allegedly tried to slam a metal gate into Riggs, but was unable to dislodge the K9, giving time for officers to move in and assist.

CSPD stated that because K9 Riggs took down the suspect, no officers or civilians were injured. The suspect was taken into custody on multiple felony charges and, after receiving medical treatment, was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

Despite how hard the suspect fought against Riggs, CSPD said that the K9 was not injured during the incident, and officers believe it is largely due to the donated ballistic vest he was wearing at the time.
