CSPD K9 Zev catches woman after alleged crime spree

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Monday, Dec. 2, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a call near South Tejon Street and Cheyenne Boulevard, about a car that had crashed into a neighborhood fence. The car turned out to be stolen and was used in an overnight crime spree, leading to an arrest with the assistance of K9 Zev.

According to CSPD, when officers arrived at the scene on the 10 block of West Brookside Street around 9 a.m., they were informed that the driver of the crashed vehicle was setting things on fire near the property of the person who called in the incident. They found that the stolen vehicle was used in an overnight crime spree that included aggravated robbery before the driver crashed.

CSPD said that officers recognized the driver as the aggravated robbery suspect, a 36-year-old woman named Elizabeth Walters. Officers had tried to arrest her around 1 a.m. the same morning, but she had gotten away in the same stolen vehicle, allegedly hitting two pedestrians and causing them serious injury during the escape. She was also reported to be carrying a firearm.

As the police had serious concerns over public safety from the earlier encounter, officers resumed attempts to apprehend Walters, but she ran, according to CSPD. A patrol officer shot a 40mm foam baton round at Walters, but it didn’t stop her.

K9 Officer Kelly and K9 Zev were on the scene, and Walters was warned to stop or Zev would be released, but she ignored the warnings and continued running, reported CSPD. Officer Kelly released Zev, who was wearing a ballistic protection vest. K9 Zev caught Walters and pulled her to the ground, allowing officers to safely approach and take her into custody.

Walters was treated at the hospital for the minor injuries she got from K9 Zev during the incident and was later booked into the county jail on multiple felony charges related to the stolen vehicle, in addition to alleged robbery charges and for eluding the police.
