(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A new program aimed at reducing injuries to children caused by improper restraint in crashes is being implemented by the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) in partnership with Safe Kids Colorado Springs.
The program will provide free car seat and booster installation checks to parents and caregivers across the community. Police said the program’s mission is to reduce injuries and deaths to children in vehicles by providing education on child safety seats and vehicle seat belts to help parents.
The program will be available at all four CSPD substations by appointment. Appointments can be scheduled online and with additional information available on Safe Kids’ website.
CSPD asks those with appointments to bring the following items to the inspection:
Car seat or booster, installed in the vehicle to the best of your ability, based on the manufacturer’s instructions
Car seat/booster manual
Vehicle manual
Current weight and height of the child
CSPD said the appointment would have certified car seat technicians to help educate about the safe installation of a child car seat or booster seat. The technicians will walk through the steps of installing a car seat, and the process can take between 30 and 45 minutes.
