(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a hit-and-run crash a little after midnight on Tuesday, March 11, which later led to the arrest of a suspect who used a child as a shield, according to CSPD.
CSPD reported that around 12:05 a.m., officers responded to a crash in the 6000 block of South Circle Drive prompting closure of that street between Airport Boulevard and Tahoe. Upon arrival, officers found the suspect had left the scene before they arrived and one person was killed on scene.
According to CSPD, an investigation revealed that a pedestrian had been in the roadway walking west when a car heading northbound struck him. The suspect then left the scene.
While officers investigated, suspect information was obtained and found to be located at the 2500 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue, near Parkside Drive. When officers attempted to arrest the suspect, 30-year-old Dominic Rodriguez, police say he attempted to use a small child as a shield.
Rodriguez was taken into custody and found to have an active felony warrant, he was treated and released at a hospital.
CSPD said he will face numerous charges for the fatal crash and crimes thar occurred when officers tried to arrest him.
