(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reported that an officer-involved shooting took place early Saturday morning, July 5, between police and a man who had been reportedly observed with a gun.
According to CSPD, around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a possible disturbance at the 100 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue, near North Tejon Street, in which a man had been reported displaying a gun around the closing of several area nightclubs.
CSPD stated that officers who had been monitoring downtown cameras spotted a man who fit the description and confirmed he was armed with what appeared to be a firearm. When officers arrived, they tried to contact the man, but as they approached, he turned and ran while reaching for his waistband.
According to CSPD, an officer fired at least one shot and hit the suspect. As they took him into custody, they began to give him medical aid, but as they were attending to him, he died. Officers found a firearm at the scene.
No other community members or officers were injured in the incident. According to CSPD, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) will lead the investigation of the officer-involved shooting.
