CSPD: Suspect called Uber after leaving crash scene

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said a suspect who left the scene of a crash tried to escape officers pursuing him by calling an Uber overnight on Thursday, July 17.

According to CSPD, just after 1 a.m. on Thursday morning, officers were called to the area of Airport Road and South Circle Drive, on reports of a disturbance involving a vehicle driving through a construction area and the driver verbally threatening workers.

When police arrived, they saw the driver, later identified as 33-year-old Nathaniel Lanier, and attempted a traffic stop. CSPD said Lanier eluded officers, and officers did not pursue.

A short time later, according to police, a crash was reported near Tahoe Boulevard and Yellowstone Drive, and police said the vehicle involved was identified as the same car that was involved in the disturbance and eluding incident from earlier. CSPD said the suspect vehicle hit an unoccupied parked car and caused significant damage to both vehicles.

Police said Lanier ran from the scene, and while officers were searching the area, they saw an Uber driver in the area.

“They were able to determine the suspect had called for the Uber,” wrote CSPD. Officers were able to locate Lanier and took him into custody in the 800 Block of Hutchinson Drive.
