D49 schools enact policy to curb cell phone use in school

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado law, HB25-1135, was passed statewide in May 2025, and on July 10, 2025, the School District 49 (D49) board of education approved a new policy limiting students’ use of cell phones during school time.

The policy prohibits all students through eighth grade from using personal electronic devices during the school day. Devices include cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, and laptops. According to the policy, they must be turned off and kept in designated locations.

High school students will be granted access to their devices during their lunch periods.

All Colorado public school districts are required to implement the policy limiting the possession and use of devices during the school day by July 1, 2026.
