Darkness has arrived: Earliest sunset of the year is here

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — The region has been seeing some of the earliest sunsets of the entire year for the last several days now. 4:37 PM is as early as the sun will set in Colorado Springs. This makes sense as the Winter Solstice is quickly approaching.

The first day of Winter is on Dec. 21 and will officially mark the shortest day of the year. Sunsets will technically start to happen a bit later, even before the shortest day of the year occurs. On Dec. 13, the sun will set at 4:38 PM but the day length will still be short all the way up until the first day of Winter.

On Dec. 22, Colorado Springs will gain a whopping 3 seconds of daylight. Thereafter, the amount of increase in our daylight will slowly become more substantial. As far as sunsets go, those will become later too. 5 p.m. sunsets will happen again by about mid-January, and our first 7 p.m. sunset will happen on March 9.

If you need a visual to help see the light at the end of the tunnel, we have you covered! 6 p.m. will still feel rather dark and cold through January and most of February. But sunlight will stick around substantially longer in March. A big reason for that is that Daylight Saving Time resumes on March 9!
