Day one of trial for former UCCS Student

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The trial for former University of Colorado Colorado Springs student, Nicholas Jordan, started Tuesday, April 8.

Jordan is on trial for allegedly taking the life of Samuel Knopp, a music student at UCCS, and Celie Montgomery, who was described by family as a shy, happy mother of two.

During opening statements, the court showed the jury photos of the crime scene and pointed out, Jordan had an argument with Knopp a month prior to the murders.

The two had an argument about Jordan not taking out the trash in the shared space of the dorm. During this argument, Jordan allegedly threatened to kill Knopp.

The evidence presented by the people shows that Jordan’s key card was used to get into the building moments before witnesses say they heard a loud bang and saw a man running away from the building. Three minutes later, another roommate made the call to 911.

Police recovered a 40-caliber gun from Jordan that forensically matched the 11 shell casings and 12 bullets left at the crime scene, as well as a case with proof of purchase for the firearm bought just after the initial threats were made by Jordan.

The defense argued that this was a case of a man who was struggling in life being ignored by the people around him.

They alluded to his mental health and not being heard as a main trigger leading up to the event, and that throughout the trial, it would be brought to life how deep that struggle really was.

The trial is scheduled to continue into next week.
