Deadly I-25 crash possibly caused by street racing

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — New information released by the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) indicates a deadly crash on I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road on April 11 may have been caused by two cars that were street racing, rather than the initial information that pointed to road rage.

According to CSPD, officers originally responded on the evening of April 11 to the northbound lanes of I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road on what was initially reported as a possible road rage crash. Numerous people were taken to the hospital, and one was pronounced dead on scene. The deceased victim has since been identified as 21-year-old Salvador Diaz.

The CSPD Major Crash Team responded to investigate the crash, and investigators have since learned that the two cars that allegedly caused the crash were possibly involved in a racing/speed contest while heading north on I-25. CSPD said as the two cars were changing lanes and competing for position on the interstate, one of them hit a third vehicle, a Toyota truck, that was not involved in the speed contest.

The Toyota lost control and hit a fourth vehicle, a gold Honda Pilot, which was also not involved in the speed contest. The Honda was occupied by seven people, one of whom was Diaz.

Upon impact by the Toyota, the Honda lost control, struck the center median guard rail, and went airborne before rolling onto the passenger side, striking a concrete light structure and coming to rest.

One of the drivers involved in the speed contest, 44-year-old Durriel Humphrey, was arrested on vehicular homicide charges but has since been released after posting a $10,000 bond.

This was the seventh traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2025. At the same time in 2024, there had been 16 traffic fatalities.
