DENVER (KDVR) — Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a male they reported was armed in the parking lot of a Highlands Ranch Main Event after an “active shooter” call inside the entertainment center, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday morning.
Deputies also arrested a female suspect the sheriff’s office said appeared to be the shooter from the active shooter call, in which another person was injured inside the “packed” business.
“It was packed; there were a lot of patrons still here when the shots rang out,” Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said in an early Sunday press conference. “Very dangerous situation. We do know we had multiple rounds that were fired inside the business.”
Deputies got the call of an active shooter just before midnight Saturday night, and the first deputy to arrive was already down the street when they got the call, Weekly said. That deputy first saw the man armed with a handgun in the parking lot, Weekly said.
“He ordered the male to drop the weapon, gave several commands,” Weekly said. “The male continued between two vehicles. At that time the male turned toward the deputy, and at that time, he was shot.”
The man died shortly after that.
Weekly said the shooting involved two females, one of which was shot in the chest by the other female. He said they do believe there was a connection between the people involved.
Another female was taken to a hospital “due to a medical issue, not life-threatening,” according to a sheriff’s office post on X.
Weekly said there is no danger to the public.
The 23rd Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the deputy’s shooting.
