Destruction of building expected to affect traffic

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The City of Pueblo said the scheduled demolition of the Albany Building will affect traffic, including drop-off and pick-up traffic for students of Connect Charter School.

The City said the Albany Building is being demolished after being condemned following a fire in August 2021, as the building poses safety risks and requires removal. The project was scheduled to begin on Monday, Jan. 22, and is expected to last through March 15.

The demolition will close lanes of East 7th Street between Santa Fe Drive and Albany Street as well as on Albany Street between E. 7th and East 8th Streets. There will also be disruptions for the pick-up and drop-off of students to Connect Charter School, the City said commuters and especially parents and guardians should plan alternate routes and allow for added travel time.

“Safety is our first priority,” stated Director of Public Works Andrew Hayes.  “We want to ensure that drivers are aware of the temporary changes in traffic operations – especially around the Connect Charter School.  The measures being implemented during the project are critical to ensure the safety of the public while work is taking place.”

The demolition is anticipated to take 45 days from start to completion, and the City will provide updates on any developments or changes to the schedule.
