DOC employee arrested for alleged road rage shooting near Fort Carson

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — A Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) employee has been arrested on attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot through the door of a car during a road rage incident near Fort Carson, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO).

According to deputies, on Dec. 11, 2024, dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a road rage shooting near the Gate 5 entrance of Fort Carson and Highway 115. EPSO said the caller reported they were heading north on Hwy 115 when another driver abruptly pulled in front of them and bake-checked the caller.

The caller reported that the suspect continued to drive aggressively and eventually pulled his car alongside the victim’s vehicle before the victim heard a loud bang. According to EPSO, a bullet had been fired through the door of the victim’s car, narrowly missing them. The suspect then drove off and entered through the gate at Fort Carson.

EPSO launched an investigation and identified the suspect car and its driver as 48-year-old Loyd Dewees. A search warrant was executed, and investigators found evidence connected to the shooting.

On April 10, 2025, a warrant was issued for Dewees on charges of Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Illegal Discharge of a Weapon, Felony Menacing, and Prohibited Use of a Weapon. On April 11, Dewees turned himself in to the El Paso County Jail, where he is being held on a $50,000 bond.

EPSO and the DOC confirmed that Dewees is an employee of the DOC. In response to a request for comment, the DOC stated “The CDOC takes these allegations seriously and is cooperating fully with law enforcement.”

Dewees has been placed on administrative leave as of April 11. As this is an active investigation, the DOC said it could not comment further on the arrest.
