Doherty High School breaks ground on field house

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Springs School District 11 (D11) broke ground on a new state- of-the-art indoor field house at Doherty High School on Wednesday, July 16.

The field house will not only be accessible to athletes but also for p.m. classes and other extracurricular activities.

“It provides an opportunity for us to get in and train in different environments, and so that will take us to the next step,” said Athletic Director, Jon Shub.

The new field house will have turf, a golf simulator, batting cages, and other tools that will allow athletes to practice even in inclement weather.

“While other schools are canceling practice during those bad weather times, we can go in here and continue practicing, continue the hard work,” said incoming Freshman Keara Smith.

This will also allow for their 5-A marching band, which competed in state last year, to have a place to practice outside the elements.

The field house was donated by a Doherty alumni, Andy Wilfong, who also has a scholarship in his parent’s name as well as stake in many other programs at Doherty.
