(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) announced on Friday, Aug. 9 that it is rescheduling a project impacting two major streets by one week.
Springs Utilities will begin work on Tuesday, Aug. 13 on underground electric work at the Nevada Avenue and Fillmore intersection. Springs Utilities said the work was postponed to expand the scope of the construction and for the safety of motorists and crews performing the electric work.
Construction was originally scheduled during the day, but will now be taking place at night, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Tuesday, Aug. 13 to Tuesday, Aug. 27.
According to Springs Utilities, they will combine two construction efforts into one: installing the previously scheduled underground electric line but also adding an additional line beneath Fillmore to meet future electric infrastructure needs.
The impacts on traffic as construction takes place are:
Aug. 13 – Aug. 20
Left turns onto Nevada Avenue will be restricted.
Left turns onto eastbound Fillmore Street will be restricted.
Eastbound Fillmore Street between Cascade and Nevada will be closed.
Traffic will be detoured onto Cascade Avenue to Winters Drive.
Through traffic will be maintained on Nevada Avenue in both directions and westbound on Fillmore Street.
Aug. 20 – Aug. 27
Through traffic will be maintained in all directions.
Northbound Nevada Avenue and westbound Fillmore Street will be restricted to one lane.
Throughout construction, crews will be working in a small area near the center of the intersection, moving their work zone and traffic control regularly. Springs Utilities reminds drivers to prepare for traffic patterns to shift throughout the project.
The Nevada Corridor is a critical part of Springs’ Utilities electric grid. It is currently served by multiple overhead electric lines and poles. In 2021, the corridor experienced several pole failures due to windstorms, underscoring the need for proactive measures to safeguard electric infrastructure against future incidents.
This is the last set of improvements that will have large customer impacts, but Springs Utilities will remain in the area performing grid improvements over the next year.
