EPSO: K9 Mako sniffs out over 50 grams of fentanyl

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office’s (EPSO) newest K9 deputy, Mako, is already hard at work, helping with an arrest on Oct. 22 that revealed fentanyl, a loaded firearm, and more.

EPSO reported that on Wednesday, Oct. 22, around 4:15 p.m., they received a request for their K9 Unit to perform an open-air sniff of a car that was suspected of containing narcotics.

Deputy Richardson and his K9 partner, Mako, arrived, and the dog gave a positive alert, prompting a full search of the car. Inside the car, EPSO found “approximately 350 (52 grams) fentanyl pills, 44 grams of methamphetamine, 105 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, and a loaded firearm with a full magazine.”

The suspect with the car, now identified as 31-year-old Warren Wooten, was booked into the El Paso County Jail for three counts of Unlawful Distribution, Manufacture, Dispensing, or Sale of a Controlled Substance, and labeled Special Offender: Drug Offenses.

According to EPSO, he is currently being held on a $50,000 bond, and the sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate.

“This is another example of how our K9 Unit strengthens public safety across El Paso County. Deputy Dakota Richardson and K9 Mako did outstanding work—removing dangerous drugs and a loaded weapon from a known felon from our community before they could cause harm. Their teamwork reflects the dedication, training, and vigilance our deputies bring to every call.”
