Fatal crash on Highway 115 involved a CDOT snowplow

(PENROSE, Colo.) — On Thursday, Jan. 30, an unidentified driver lost control of their vehicle and collided with a Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) snowplow, according to Colorado State Patrol (CSP).

CSP said on Thursday at around 7:15 a.m., troopers were called to a crash on Highway 115 near milepost 18 north of Penrose. The crash involved a Subaru Outback, driven by an unidentified man, and a CDOT snowplow driven by a 45-year-old man from Cañon City.

Troopers’ investigation revealed the snowplow was traveling south on Hwy 115 removing snow and the Outback was traveling north. The driver of the Outback lost control on the snow-packed and slushy road and started to rotate into the southbound lanes. CSP said the driver’s side of the Outback hit the front of the snowplow before moving off the east side of the road.

The driver of the Outback was pronounced dead at the scene and will be identified by the Fremont County Coroner when identification and appropriate notifications are made. The driver of the snowplow received minor injuries and refused transport to the hospital. Both vehicles were only occupied by the drivers.

CSP’s Vehicular Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
