(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Dining options in Colorado Springs have come a long way. For a taste of something exotic, be sure to visit King Restaurant Indian Kitchen & Bar, where traditional Punjabi cuisine meets creative cooking.
This week’s FOX21 Foodie Finds explores the growing popularity of this new royal treat in southern Colorado.
Amar Mand, the owner of King Restaurant, is confident that his place stands out from the rest. As he puts it, “I think we have a unique taste, and it’s a bit different than every other restaurant in town.”
The restaurant serves popular Punjabi dishes, including beloved classics like butter chicken, malai chicken tikka, and tikka masala. However, Amar and his family don’t just stick to the traditional.
“We have some new entrees, too, like fusion coconut lamb chops. We have some Baltis, which are British-inspired entrees that are really unique and really flavorful,” he said.
Amar Mand has kept some of the charms from the restaurant’s previous owner. “A big shout-out to Chef Bob’s Lobstah Trap—we bought the place from him. He’s a great guy. We kept some of the original look and added our own touches,” he says. The mix of old and new has gone over really well with diners. Amar adds, “We’ve had a great response so far. People are liking our food, and we’re seeing a lot of repeat and new customers.”
At King Restaurant, naan bread truly steals the show. Each piece is made fresh to order in a traditional clay oven, giving it a unique crispy, charcoal-like flavor. Amar Mand emphasizes the significance of this method, noting, “I think that the only way you should eat a naan is in the tandoor. It’s the best way.”
The commitment to keeping these culinary traditions is deeply personal. With over 35 years of experience, much of what Amar knows comes from his father. “My dad has taught me everything I know about the business.” It’s clear that this tradition is something Amar is passionate about, and he strives to honor it with every dish he serves. “I like to say I make him proud.”
King Restaurant offers an authentic and flavorful dining experience, whether you’re a fan of Indian cuisine or new to the flavors.
