Fort Carson honors service members with new gate name

(FORT CARSON, Colo.) — The Mountain Post announced the new name of one of its gates on Wednesday, Aug. 14 with a special ceremony.

Located outside of the Fort Carson Visitor Center, Gate 1 received a new name to honor three 4th Infantry Division Medal of Honor Recipients: Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha, Ty Carter, and Capt. Florent Groberg.

Gate 1 was renamed “Freedom Gate” in honor of the three service members. Romesha, who was recognized for his heroic actions while deployed to Kamdesh, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, was in attendance.

“Staff Sergeant Romesha is a hero, he really does represent the best of our Army,” said MG David Scott Doyle, Fort Carson’s Commanding General. “A non-commissioned officer who was brave in combat but also continues to give back to the Army and the nation.”

The naming of Gate 1 is the first of five Fort Carson gates that will be named in honor of select 4th Infantry Division individuals and groups.
