Pueblo SWAT uses tear gas to arrest barricaded suspect

(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — A man has been arrested in Pueblo County after barricading himself inside his home and refusing to come out until after SWAT team members used tear gas.

According to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), detectives with the Special Investigations Unit were attempting to arrest a man for Menacing on Thursday, Aug. 15, after several calls had been received over the last month reporting “concerning behavior.” Detectives had obtained a felony arrest warrant for 38-year-old John Moorman, and were attempting to take him into custody on Thursday when he barricaded himself inside his Pueblo West home.

PCSO said the Pueblo County SWAT team responded, and CS gas, commonly referred to as tear gas, was used. PCSO said immediately after the gas was used, Moorman came out of the home, where he was arrested. No deputies or bystanders were injured.

“My deputies had to respond to a suspect wanted on a felony menacing warrant and they exercised proper rules of engagement to ensure their safety, the community’s safety, and the safety of the wanted party,” said Sheriff David J. Lucero.

During the incident, reverse 911 calls were sent to neighbors to evacuate the area, though they were later allowed to return home.
