Free Legal Resource Day offers free consultations and classes in Colorado Springs

(COLORADO SPRINGS) —  Friday, Oct. 24, is Free Legal Resource Day, and the 4th Judicial District Access to Justice Committee is offering several resources to the community. Lisa Younger Anderson and Judge Dennis McGuire joined FOX21 Morning News to talk about what people can expect.

“We have classes on small claims, on tenants’ rights, how to get a protection order, and also the last one is how to navigate the debt collection process,” said Judge McGuire.

People also have the chance to sign up for a free 15-minute consultation with an attorney.

“One of the most expensive things you can do is go through a court case. A court case can cost you anything from just a few hundred dollars for a consultation to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the type of case,” said Judge McGuire. “Most people can’t afford that, so this is an opportunity for people to educate themselves so they can navigate through the court process.”

According to the Colorado Judicial Branch, last year, there were over 42,000 district and county court civil cases filed in the 4th Judicial District. Around 66% of litigants did not have an attorney.

Local agencies and nonprofits will also be in attendance to provide services and information.

“We’ll have TESSA representatives, we’ll have Center on Fathering, we’ll have a plethora of different housing, we’ll have library services–just to name a few,” said Younger Anderson.

Free Legal Resource Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the El Paso County Judicial Building, located at 270 South Tejon Street. Don’t miss it, because the next one won’t be until October of 2026.

“Yes, they’ll have to wait a full year, but the resources that they could learn about here are available all year round,” said Judge McGuire.
