(COLORADO) — A ‘dedicated’ Colorado Buffaloes’ football fan has sued the National Football League (NFL) after Shedeur Sanders’ fall from projected first overall pick to 144th during this year’s NFL Draft.
An anonymous fan from Georgia, listed on the lawsuit as “John Doe,” is suing the NFL for emotional distress, citing that the leaked statements that suggested Sanders “tanked interviews”, “wasn’t prepared” and “was too cocky,” harmed his reputation. Doe cited various claims in the lawsuit, including the violation of the Civil Rights Act.
In the projected pick, various AFC and NFC members said Sanders was “entitled” among other character criticisms.
“The decisions made regarding Sanders may have been influenced by racial discrimination, violating his rights as a player,” the lawsuit states.
John Doe alleges that despite witnessing firsthand Sanders’ talent, potential, skills, and significant attention throughout the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the NFL drafted him at 144th. The NFL had previously projected Sanders would be a Round 1-2 pick, and ranked him at #2, right below first-round pick Cam Ward.
The lawsuit further states that the NFL may have engaged in “unfair practices by misrepresenting the nature of the drafting process and qualifications of the players.
“These slanderous statements reflect biases that influenced the NFL’s decision-making process, causing emotional distress and trauma to the Plaintiff as a fan and consumer.”
Sanders ended up being a 5th-round pick at 144th, going to the Cleveland Browns.
The lawsuit was filed on Thursday, May 1. Due to the alleged emotional distress caused, Doe is asking for $100 million in damages.
