Have you gotten this text? “Don’t be fooled”

(COLORADO) — The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is warning Coloradans of a new wave of fraudulent texts and emails from scammers impersonating the DMV.

The DMV warned individuals on Monday, July 21, of a series of fake texts that were pretending to be the Colorado DMV. According to Governor Polis, who addressed the scam on Tuesday, the messages falsely claim an individual has unpaid tickets and make threats of prosecution or license suspension.

“Don’t be fooled!” Polis wrote via Facebook. “These messages are false and intended to intimidate you into sharing personal information. Stay safe!”

Per the DMV, the texts state that they are from the “Colorado DMV” or a similar official-sounding entity and contain a link to a fake website to “resolve” the issue or make a payment.

“These messages are NOT from the Colorado DMV. The DMV does not initiate contact via unsolicited text messages and emails to demand payment for tickets or to threaten prosecution or suspension of privileges in this manner,” the DMV wrote on its website.

Individuals who receive a message claiming to be from the DMV should:

Not click on any links, as they often lead to fake websites designed to steal information.

Not share any personal or financial information. This includes driver’s license, Social Security number, credit card details, or banking information.

Not reply to the message.

“We will never ask for your personal info over text,” the DMV said. “No links. No fines. No deadlines.”
