Help EPSO solve a 37-year-old cold case

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) is asking for the public’s help in solving a murder that occurred in 1988.

“Even seemingly minor details could help bring closure to this decades-old case.” EPSO wrote.

On Sept. 11, 1988, 17-year-old Towana Lewis’s body was discovered in an agricultural irrigation ditch near Goldfield Drive and the Big Johnson Reservoir, in the Widefield area.

An autopsy by the El Paso County Coroner determined she died by strangulation.

Lewis was known to spend time at Prospect Lake Park and was reportedly seen there in the days leading up to her death. She was last seen alive on either Sept. 9 or 10, 1988.

Investigators are particularly interested in talking to anyone who knew Sergeant Darwyn H. Jones, a former soldier stationed at Fort Carson. Although Sgt. Jones is now dead; he was acquainted with Lewis and may have had information about her activities before her death.

At that time, Sgt. Jones was a tank turret mechanic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment. He served there from February 1986 through July 1988.

Anyone with information on the case, Towana Lewis, or Sgt. Darwyn Jones is asked to contact EPSO at (719)-520-7777.
