Homeowner holds alleged burglar at gunpoint until police arrives

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — One homeowner took matters into their own hands and held a burglar at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived after the alleged thief broke into the home.

On Tuesday, May 21, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) received a 911 call from a home in the 2700 block of Pony Club Lane, located in the Cimarron Hills neighborhood. The caller reported hearing someone in their garage, and while on the line with dispatch, the call taker could hear the homeowner shouting at someone inside the home.

When deputies arrived, they found the homeowner holding a suspect at gunpoint outside the home. As deputies approached, the suspect, 27-year-old Brody Burnett, ran away. After a brief foot chase, Burnett was arrested.

According to the homeowner, his security alarm was triggered when Burnett entered the garage. The homeowner located Burnett inside and detained him at gunpoint until deputies arrived.

Burnett was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail on several charges, including Second Degree Burglary, Possession of Burglary Tools, Attempted Criminal Trespass – Auto, Criminal Possession of a Financial Transaction Device, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance – Fentanyl, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Burnett also had active warrants for failure to appear on both a felony and misdemeanor case. He is being held on a $10,000 bond for the new charges, and without bond for the outstanding warrants.
