(PIKES PEAK REGION, Colo.) — On Tuesday, June 10, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) shared a story about Lizzy, a dog who needed help, highlighting the importance of checking in on loved ones who may be struggling with declining health or dementia and their pets.
According to HSPPR, Lizzy was a deeply cherished friend and companion to her owner, who adored her and took good care of her. But over time, dementia set in with her person, stealing memories of things that were important to him, including his beloved dog.
A family member stopped by to check in and discovered that Lizzy needed help. She was extremely thin and had injuries on her body from being confined in a kennel for too long.
Once she was found, the people who love both her and her owner made the compassionate decision to bring her to HSPPR to get help and find a new home with people who could care for her for the rest of her life.
Lizzy needed a great deal of care, according to HSPPR. She was emaciated and weak, and besides the wounds on her back legs, she had a mass on her mammary gland. The veterinary team gently treated her injuries and fed her slowly, giving her time to heal. And Lizzy responded with trust, cooperating with every exam and leaning into every gentle hand.
Over time, Lizzy grew stronger, and her wounds have been healing. The mass was tested and determined to be benign. She’s gained weight, and more importantly, her spark.
Once she was ready, she was made available for adoption, and on Tuesday, the same day her story was shared, she was adopted into a new home where she can have her happy-ever-after.
HSPPR used the story not just to help Lizzy find a home, but to remind everyone to “check on the people you love, especially those who may be growing quieter, especially those with pets. Sometimes, the signs of struggle are subtle. But your presence, your call, your visit, your offer to help can mean the world.”
HSPPR stated that there is no shame in reaching out to them when a pet owner finds themselves overwhelmed by the responsibility of care.
