(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) and Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) announced the cause of a fire that broke out in an evidence lot on Oct. 4.
Around 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 4, an EPSO deputy spotted a fire in the uncovered evidence lot, located on the south end of the El Paso County Jail campus, when they arrived for their shift at the jail. According to EPSO, CSFD and the Stratmoor Hills Fire Department were able to respond to the fire in minutes.
EPSO reports that neither the evidence facility nor the jail was impacted by structural damage from the fire, but 13 vehicles in the evidence lot received fire damage. Said vehicles were all being held as evidence in criminal cases, ranging from being in early prosecution to appeal.
CSFD investigators were able to determine that the fire started in one of the vehicles and was electrical in nature, finding the cause to be accidental.
After the fire was out, EPSO notified the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and started identifying cases associated with the vehicles to ensure all parties remained informed of the event. EPSO states that the investigation and notification process took several weeks to make sure proper notice was given to everyone involved.
Notifications were completed by EPSO and the District Attorney’s Office.
