Jenkins students return to school at Doherty

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Jenkins Middle School students returned for their first day of the spring semester at Doherty High School, after the sudden closure of Jenkins Middle School earlier in January.

Jenkins students were welcomed on Friday by Doherty students, complete with cheerleaders, band members, and students sporting school pride. The new students could not return to Jenkins for the spring because it was deemed unsafe after an inspection, with fire safety and structural issues being the main concerns.

“This display of camaraderie and collaboration showcases the unity and resilience of our school community, which has been instrumental in ensuring a smooth and speedy transition,” said Colorado Springs School District 11.

Showing up at a new school can be nerve wracking for kids, especially when they had very little warning about the move and the students at Doherty are older. That’s why the students at Doherty said it was important to make the Jenkins students feel welcomed and safe.

“I think it’s super important, because dealing with fears is a hard thing, especially when you’re little,” said Ja Kobi Cockerham, a senior at Doherty. “So I think it’s good that we kind of acclimate them into Doherty and help them know that this is going to be their home soon.”

Not all students will be attending classes at Doherty, and the remaining students were bussed to Russell Middle School.
