Storm damage video from destructive system in UK

(INTERNATIONAL) — An intense storm system moved through much of the UK region early Friday morning (local time), Jan. 24. This destructive storm system brought extreme winds and caused extensive damage in places like Glasgow, Belfast, and Galway just to name a few.

This storm system was powerful enough to be classified as a ‘bomb-cyclone’–You may have heard that term once or twice before. To be considered a bomb-cyclone, the pressure of the system must drop at least 24 millibars in 24 hours. This system exceeded those qualifications and packed a nasty punch for residents of the UK and Ireland as a result.

Local officials reported a wind gust of 113 mph at one point. This preliminary measurement would break the record for the highest wind gust ever recorded in Ireland.

Videos from areas across the region have been surfacing to show just how damaging those winds were. In the video collection above you can see a shed being ripped apart, a trampoline being tossed over a fence, and a large tree completely uprooted.

At 113 mph, these winds could be classified as an EF2 tornado. Even though the winds weren’t swirling (like a tornado), straight line wind damage can be just as dangerous.
