Large hail possible Wednesday afternoon

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — A cold front moving across eastern Colorado this morning is bringing north breezes, cooler air, and a significant increase in low-level moisture.

After 90s and 100s on Tuesday, we’ll get a 10-15 degree drop east of the Rocky Mountains for high temperatures.

Denver and parts of the Palmer Divide have experienced low clouds early as dewpoints are in the mid-50s to low 60s behind the cold front.

This low-level moisture acts as energy for storms in the afternoon. Storms that form over the mountains will encounter the low-level moisture and strengthen as they use this additional energy.

Large to golf-ball-size hail is the biggest threat over the foothills and areas along and just east of the Interstate. As you click through the photos in the slideshow below, the individual storm cells will congeal into a cluster this evening, and as that happens, the threat for the largest hail stones will drop back some, to around an inch in diameter, but strong and damaging wind gusts will become more likely over the plains. These gusts may approach 70mph.
