Long-lasting evening storms bring flood risk

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) – The FOX21 Storm Team has been harping on the Thursday and Friday time frame all week long as ingredients are coming together for some widespread soaking rain.

Moisture remains trapped under an area of high pressure over the southwestern US. This monsoon moisture is in the mid-levels and keeps “recycling” each afternoon and evening as afternoon and evening storms.

The seasonal monsoon remains over the southwest US and flowing into Colorado sparking daily thunderstorms over the mountains of the four-corners states.

4PM: Post-frontal upslope from western Kansas into the foothills

4PM: Abundant surface moisture surges up the Arkansas River valley into the Rocky Mountains

The arriving cold front on Thursday will bring increasing upslope flow at the surface, pushing moisture in the low levels of the atmosphere “up the slope” and into the Rocky Mountains.

The best combination of the surface moisture/lift and the monsoon is right over the heart of the viewing area into this evening. Use the arrows to step forward in time from 3pm Thursday afternoon to 6am Friday. Notice how a widespread, long-lasting cluster of storms develops over the Pikes Peak Region to Pueblo and the mountains southwest. Moderate to heavy rain in these slow-moving storms may bring an increased flash flood threat this evening.
