(BENT COUNTY, Colo.) — A man driving a stolen car linked to a homicide investigation has been arrested following a high-speed chase in Bent County on Sunday, Aug. 4.
According to the Bent County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), around 9 p.m. on Sunday, deputies tried to pull over a car for a traffic violation on Highway 50, northwest of the John Martin Reservoir. Deputies then discovered that the car was reported stolen out of Lamar, and was connected to a homicide investigation in Colorado Springs.
BCSO said the car drove east toward Lamar, leading deputies on a high-speed chase that continued east to County Road 27.3 and County Road JJ, where it turned south toward the Arkansas River. BCSO said the car then drove off an embankment, into the river bottom, and became wedged between two large trees.
BCSO said the suspect ran on foot into the river bottom, at which point additional law enforcement officers responded to assist in the chase, including drones, a bloodhound tracking dog, and a Colorado State Patrol search plane.
The suspect, 36-year-old Roger Vargas Jr. was taken into custody and medically cleared before being taken to the Bent County Jail and booked on charges of Vehicular Eluding. He had a felony parole warrant for Escape and parole violation, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
