(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A man has been arrested after he allegedly fired shots into the air on the east side of Pueblo, before trying to drive away from the scene and hitting a Pueblo Police cruiser.
According to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), officers originally responded just before 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4 to a call reporting a man with a gun making suicidal and homicidal statements in the 1700 block of East 12th Street, off Portland Avenue on the city’s east side. PPD said the person who made the call to 911 would not provide a specific address but identified the man with the gun as a family member.
PPD said dispatchers were able to narrow down the address, though responding officers were unable to find anyone when they initially arrived. After speaking to a neighbor who reported hearing arguing and a loud “boom” sound, a man stepped out on the porch of a nearby home with a shotgun.
PPD said the man did not immediately point the gun at anyone but held it out in front of himself, demanding to be shot. He then walked to the back of the house and fired several rounds into the air before returning to the front of the house.
The man “leveled his shotgun towards one of the officers,” PPD said, and the officer fired once at the man, though the man was not hit by the gunfire. PPD said the man retreated into the home but then jumped into his pickup truck and hit one of PPD’s cruisers as he drove away. He returned a few seconds later and got out of the truck without the gun, and was taken into custody without further incident.
The man was medically cleared before being booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center on charges of Felony Menacing, Prohibited Use of a Weapon, and Reckless Driving. His identity has not been released.
