(MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo.) — On Sunday, May 25, many community members turned out to show off their green thumbs at the Manitou Springs Garden Club‘s annual plant sale.
Roughly 80% to 90% of the plants available were grown by club members and are well-suited to the local climate and altitude. Shoppers could choose from annuals and perennials to berry bushes, tomatoes, and other food-producing plants.
The event is the Garden Club’s only fundraiser and a tradition they have continued for 20 years. Proceeds from the event go back into the community through local grants.
“We have a website, Manitou Springs Garden Club, and a Facebook page. We take grant applications in the fall and in the winter, and we give small grants up to $400 for sustainability, resilience, and beautification in the community, and we probably give $2,000 to $3,000 of grants back to the community every year,” said Jeanie Taylor, member of the Manitou Springs Garden Club.
The club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. and is always welcoming new members.
