Manitou Springs PD arrest hit-and-run and assault suspect

(MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo.) — The Manitou Springs Police Department (MSPD) has arrested a man, who is currently on parole, after he allegedly assaulted a police officer.

On Monday, May 12, officers with MSPD responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash in the 500 block of Manitou Avenue, near El Paso Boulevard. The suspect, identified as James Alan Hummel, escaped and drove recklessly eastbound on Manitou Avenue.

Due to the erratic nature of the suspect’s driving, officers did not pursue. The suspect crashed a second time in the 3000 block of West Colorado Avenue and escaped again on foot. Officers located Hummel hiding in a nearby yard, where he was taken into custody.

During the arrest, Hummel physically assaulted a police officer. The officer did not need medical attention. Witnesses also reported seeing Hummel in possession of a weapon during the incident, while no weapon was found on him or the people, a 9mm gun was found near the scene and has been booked for forensic processing.

Hummel, a convicted felon currently on parole, was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on multiple felony and traffic charges, including assault on a peace officer.
