(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The city of Colorado Springs is trying to figure out what to do with the building that once housed the recently closed Meadows Park Community Center.
Mayor Yemi Mobolade and several members of City Council held a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 22 to brainstorm some ideas. Most suggestions involved finding a way for the building to bring in revenue for the city, including renting out the space for for classes, events like family reunions and parades, or even a non-profit.
Some members of the community told the mayor they think the center should not have shut down in the first place.
“This place has saved our neighborhood. We need it. These old people, they have nowhere to go. Their children don’t come visit them. They don’t even call them. They come here. These people love them. Why should we spend our money when we have our own little neighborhood here? Our community. The people that we love?” said community member Coco.
The center closed earlier in October as part of the cuts the City made to close a $31 million budget shortfall.
