Missing boater who launched 23-hour search on Lake Pueblo identified by coroner

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A man who went missing after the fishing boat he was on capsized on Lake Pueblo and launched what would become a nearly 23-hour search last weekend has been identified by the Pueblo County Coroner.

According to the Coroner, the man was identified as 28-year-old Derrick Lee Vigil of Pueblo, who “…drowned as a result of the accident.”

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the man’s body was recovered from Lake Pueblo on Saturday evening, May 31, after high winds the night before, May 30, caused the boat with three anglers to overturn. CPW said the two others on board were able to swim to shore.

CPW Rangers and Marine Evidence Recovery Team, along with the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office and the Pueblo West Fire Department, responded to help with the search. At 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Vigil’s body was found and recovered.

“Our hearts go out to the loved ones of the victim,” said Lake Pueblo State Park Manager Joe Stadterman. “Any loss of life in our state parks is a terrible day. We thank the responding agencies for their work and park visitors for their patience during the operation.”

According to CPW, no one in the boat was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident.
