Suspect hit, killed by PPD vehicle identified

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Pueblo County Coroner has identified the man who was hit and killed by a Pueblo Police Department (PPD) vehicle on Tuesday, June 3, after an alleged shoplifting incident.

According to the coroner, 36-year-old Antonio Herrera died of his injuries after a PPD vehicle hit him near the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) Pueblo office on the north side of the city.

The incident occurred after PPD officers originally responded shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday to an alleged shoplifting call at the Famous Footwear on North Elizabeth Street. The suspect, now identified as Herrera, allegedly ran away and was chased by officers both on foot and in police vehicles.

Herrera allegedly approached the CSP office with a weapon drawn, and when commands to drop the gun were ignored, an officer inside one of the vehicles hit Herrera. Medical aid was provided to Herrera, but he died on the scene.

The 10th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is investigating the incident.
