Mitchell High School AFJROTC hosting 9/11 ceremony

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Thursday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m., Mitchell High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) will lead the community in a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony honoring the lives lost in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The ceremony will be held at Mitchell High School to bring together students, staff, families, first responders, and community leaders to remember and reflect on the lives lost on 9/11.

Colorado Springs School District 11 said the centerpiece of this year’s event is a special tribute to Ms. Kathryn Yancey LaBorie, a 1975 graduate of Mitchell High School. LaBorie was serving as a flight attendant aboard United Airlines Flight 175 when it was hijacked and flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Her story connects the global tragedy to the Colorado Springs community.

The event will feature performances and participation from:

Mitchell High School’s JROTC Cadets, Band, and Choir

Colorado Springs Fire Department

Colorado Springs Police Department

Members of the Yancey family

D11 said the event will also mark the beginning of “9/11 – A Journey to Remember,” a yearlong bikeride across the United States led by retired California firefighter John Martin.
