Mountain highway safety tips for motorcyclists this summer

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado State Patrol (CSP) wants two-wheel owners to be safe while cruising through mountain highways this summer.

CSP advises motorcycle drivers to know their route before heading out to ensure a successful motor tour. Although it may be sunny and warm at home, riders should still bring cold weather gear and plenty of water.

Motorcycle riders are also advised to wear their gear, pay attention to the road and other drivers, and use the front brake.

Elevation and unpredictable road conditions are a part of riding through the Rockies. Here are some common hazards to watch for during your ride:

Blind corners with sheer rock faces next to the road

Narrow shoulders or no shoulder at all with sharp drop-offs

Rocks, gravel, and other debris from snow melt

Switchbacks and tight corners with little preparation time

Congestion from RVs and vehicles towing boats and ATVs

Potholes, bumps, and weather-damaged surfaces
