(COLORADO SPRINGS) — In a video submitted by a FOX21 News viewer, a mother mountain lion and her two cubs can be seen walking across a driveway in the Broadmoor Bluffs neighborhood in the early morning hours of Thursday, Feb. 15.
FOX21 viewer Steven H. shared a video captured on his Ring security camera just after 4:30 a.m. on Thursday. Steven told FOX21 that the momma mountain lion and her cubs walked through the Cheyenne Mountain Elementary school zone on their journey through Broadmoor Bluffs.
While encounters with mountain lions are rare, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has provided tips on what to do if you run into one out on the trail, or as seen in the video provided by Steven, when they happen upon your backyard:
Make noise during lion-active times (dusk to dawn) when coming and going.
Install outdoor lighting and supervise children outdoors, keeping them close or moving inside between dusk and dawn.
Landscape to eliminate hiding spots for lions, especially around play areas.
Avoid planting vegetation that attracts deer, as predators follow prey.
Control and secure pets to avoid attracting lions.
Place livestock in enclosed areas at night and secure all outbuildings.
Encourage neighbors to follow these precautions for a safer coexistence.
