DENVER (KDVR) — Mudslides on Saturday night closed Highway 82 fully, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The agency has established a detour while crews work to remove the rocky debris and flood waters from the roadway. CDOT told FOX31 there are crews on scene to dig out the three- to four-feet-deep debris flows of mud and rock that have covered a 3/4 mile stretch of highway.
The road is closed for a five-mile stretch south of Glenwood Springs between Red Canyon Road and County Road 114 from milepost 4.7 to milepost 6.6. The agency is detouring drivers to County Road 154 (Old State Highway 82 Bypass), which runs adjacent to the highway.
CDOT told FOX31 that it expects to reopen Highway 82 eastbound on Monday morning, and the full highway by noon on Monday. However, crews will be working all night to make that happen.
CDOT told FOX31 there were 11 vehicles caught in the slide, and all have been recovered. All drivers and passengers were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported. Crews are working to clean up the area with three front-loaders, a backhoe and nine trucks to haul debris.
Overnight, CDOT crews cut a trench through the rocky debris to allow water to flow away from the flooded area.
CDOT is encouraging travelers in Colorado to:
Be aware of weather conditions and forecasts. Heavy rainstorms can cause flooding, mudslides, and falling rocks.
Never drive through flooded areas: Motorists cannot tell how deep or how fast the water is running.
Even a few inches of water or mud can float an average-sized car, sweeping it off the road
Mudslides and flooding can prevent drivers from knowing where the road is, or where hazards and debris are under the water’s surface and in the mud
Motorists can stay up to date on this road closure by visiting the COtrip app online or on their smartphone.
