NOW HIRING: Barr Camp caretakers serving guests of America’s Mountain

(PIKES PEAK, Colo.) — Calling all outdoor enthusiasts looking for a new adventure, Barr Camp is looking for two people to manage, operate, and live at its remote cabin which serves as the halfway point for hikers scaling America’s Mountain.

“It’s more than loving the outdoors; it’s being passionate and enjoying the wilderness. You are living and working in the wilderness,” Board Chair of Barr Camp, Rick Hessek, wrote to FOX21.

According to the job description, those who apply must be able to work and live in all types of weather and at an altitude of 10,200 feet, not to mention being able to access the camp by hiking uphill more than six miles.

“Loving the outdoors, I look at it as enjoying hiking, skiing, fishing, and camping,” elaborated Hessek. “Those adventures may only last one week and we all go back to our homes and jobs in the city. [As] Barr Camp caretaker, your home and work are in the wilderness.”

There is also a minimum commitment of one year for all applicants and responsibilities include; cooking meals for guests, washing dishes and other cleaning duties, maintaining camp systems and buildings, along with customer service and hospitality experience, just to name a few.

Hessek said applications are steadily coming in. “There has been a fair amount of interest within Colorado and outside of Colorado.”

Guests visit Barr Camp year-round and according to the job posting, during winter months there can be anywhere from three to 30 people per day, but in the summer months, those visits can be between 200 to 500 people.

Hessek said the amount of guests that stop, whether it be locals or visitors from around the world, meeting new people is part of what makes working at Barr Camp so exciting. He added, there are some tough parts to the job as well.

“Biggest challenges [are] it’s long hours each day that you need to be basically in or around the cabin, be accessible to trail users, adjusting to not having all the amenities of living in the city [and] not having much personal space,” Hessek wrote.

In 2015, FOX21 did a special report on Caretakers and siblings Zach and Ashley Miller, who gave us an inside look at the day-to-day operations. Ashley shared with FOX21 the advantages of working at Barr Camp.

“We don’t have to worry about a lot of things. We can get by on limited health insurance. The stipend is perfect for paying off college loans and you don’t have any living expenses, so I looked at it, as a way to get rid of some debt,” Ashley said.
