(ROCKY FORD, Colo.) — An off-duty volunteer firefighter, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was injured on Sunday, April 27, after they got out of their car while it was in motion, and the car caused damage to several Rocky Ford Police vehicles.
According to a press release from the Rocky Ford Police Department (RFPD), shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, police responded to an injury crash on 9th Street between Walnut Avenue and the railroad tracks in Rocky Ford.
RFPD said the investigation so far has revealed that an off-duty volunteer firefighter with the Rocky Ford Fire Department was driving a private vehicle when they got out while the car was still moving, causing injuries to the firefighter. The car continued on without the driver and crashed into an RFPD patrol car that was parked outside the police station on 9th Street.
The impact pushed the police car into a second parked police car, damaging both.
The firefighter was taken to a hospital in La Junta and was later flown to a trauma center. The extent of their injuries is unknown, RFPD said. Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor.
To ensure the investigation is impartial, RFPD said the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and Otero County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the crash.
