Officials hope for more recreation on Pikes Peak

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Pikes Peak is known as America’s Mountain, and on a clear day, you can see it from over 100 miles away. Key stakeholders are considering expanding and improving recreation on it, to get you closer to its beauty.

Governor Jared Polis visited Colorado Springs on Monday, Feb. 10 to share plans regarding the future of Pikes Peak. He, among many other leaders, announced a new federal and local partnership to explore the management of recreational opportunities on the mountain.

“We believe that we have a lot to offer in this space, to the many people who already seek out Pikes Peak for outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities,” said Jeff Davis, the Director of Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

Gov. Polis believes the partnership could result in a “Pikes Peak Recreation Area,” managed by CPW. He said it would allow for local management, instead of having to go to Washington for every little improvement. He also added that he would like to see a multi-year plan to enhance camping, fishing, hiking and other recreational amenities on the mountain.

CPW said the partnership is focused on completing the “Ring the Peak Trail.”

“By working together, we can expand outdoor recreation opportunities, boost conservation efforts, support our tourism economy, create more opportunities for Coloradans and visitors to enjoy our beautiful wild spaces and better protect and manage our natural resources in an intergenerational and sustainable way,” said Gov. Polis.

Now, the partners just need to draft a long-term agreement with CPW, according to the governor.
