Over 200 flights delayed on windy day at DIA

DENVER (KDVR) — More than 150 flights have been delayed at the Denver International Airport on Monday.

A Pinpoint Weather Alert Day has been issued Monday due to an array of weather warnings across the state. For the Front Range and Eastern Plains, including DIA, a high wind warning is in effect until 5 p.m. with gusts up to 60 mph possible.

While DIA does not confirm the reason behind the flight delays, the weather could have an impact on those trying to get home after the holiday week.

According to FlightAware, at 12:25 p.m., 201 flights were delayed and four were canceled.

The most delays were for the following airlines:

Southwest – 72

United – 64

SkyWest – 25

The cancellations were for the following airlines:

United – 4

At 12:15 p.m., the National Weather Service said DIA was experiencing 28 mph winds out of the northwest with gusts up to 41 mph.

The Pinpoint Weather team said winds are expected to slow by the evening and taper off by New Year’s Eve.

According to DIA, Monday, Dec. 30 is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year with thousands of people returning home or flying out to celebrate New Year’s.

Officials at DIA said the busiest hours of the day will be 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., with the highest volume of passengers going through security daily from:

6 a.m. to noon

3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The busy travel period is expected to continue through Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025. Be sure to check with your airline before heading to the airport.
